5 Top Mini Golf Tips: Improve Your Game and Have Fun!

Mini golf is a fun and exciting recreational activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It's a great way to challenge yourself, have fun with friends and family, and engage in some healthy competition. If you’re in it to win it, you’re going to need some expert advice to take your putting game to the next level.

So, if you want to improve your game and start putting like a pro, here are our five mini top tips:

1. Master Your Putting Technique

First things first, it's important to master your mini golf putting technique. Let’s begin by working on your stance. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent with the ball directly between your feet.

Once your stance is mastered it’s time to pick up your putter. This is your only piece of equipment, so you need to know exactly how to use it correctly to become a putting pro. The first thing to think about is how you grab the putter. Always use 2 hands and only ever grab the grip tape at the top of the putter. If your hands are touching metal, move them up or get a smaller club! You should always have a firm grip on the putter. A firm grip will give you more control of the ball and allow you to determine your power.

Next, it’s time to work on the all important swing. Make a smooth, pendulum stroke motion using your shoulder muscles to create the movement. Your arms should remain straight and firm and there shouldn’t be any movement in your wrists, elbows or hips. Again, this gives you greater control when playing. All that’s left to do is to follow through with your swing and get a hole in one (hopefully!)

2. Read the Course and Understand Obstacles

What's the beauty of mini golf? Every course is completely different! At one of our centres for example, your ball might be surfing on ocean waves one minute, then flying down a fairground helter skelter the next.

That’s why it’s so important to perform a quick mini golf course reading and understand the obstacles before you start. This will help you plan your shots and avoid making costly mistakes. Some of the key things that all good putters look out for are:

  • The distance of the hole.
  • The location of the obstacles.
  • The terrain of the course.

By assessing these three simple things, you will be able to make the right choice with your shots each and every time. Say goodbye to double figure scores and hello to holes in ones.

3. Manage Your Swing Strength

Your mini golf swing management is something that’s most likely going to take some time to perfect. It's important to adjust your swing strength based on the distance of the hole and the terrain. If you hit the ball too hard, you might overshoot the hole. If you hit the ball too soft, you might not have enough power to reach the hole.

Sometimes you'll be faced with a tricky situation, such as a narrow opening or a water hazard. In these cases, you'll need to use a finesse shot. A finesse shot is a soft, controlled shot that is designed to get the ball into the hole without hitting any obstacles.

4. Stay Focused and Visualise Success

Mini golf can be a frustrating game, but it's important to stay focused and positive. The reality is that you won’t get a hole in one every single time, and there might be holes where putting seems like the most difficult thing in the world. Remember your mini golf putting technique, play your game and most of all have fun!

Lots of seasoned putters find it easier to visualise themself sinking the putt before they take a shot, or think of themself getting crowned the king or queen of putting at the end of the course. Try this out for yourself - it will help you stay relaxed and confident.

5. Respect Other Players and the Course

Mini golf is a social game, so it's important to be mindful of other players. Whilst it’s always great to have a laugh and joke, try to remain quiet when others are playing their turn. As well as this, it’s important that you always remain safe when playing mini golf. This means using the putters and balls in the correct way, and not climbing on any of the obstacles on the course. Indoor mini golf should be fun for everyone, and no one wants to get an injury!

It’s also good mini golf etiquette to always be patient and wait your turn. Don’t overtake other groups and allow everyone to have the time they need to complete a hole. Remember; not everyone is a putting-pro and some might take a little bit longer than others.
